Vivianite forms on human and animal remains when the phosphate from decomposing bodies interacts with iron and water in a low-oxygen environment, such as a waterlogged grave or bog. The crystals are initially clear but turn blue upon exposure to air, creating a blue or blue-green color on the bones and tissues. The blue-green color will eventually turn black due to exposure over time. These specimens are incredibly cool but very fragile. It’s not unusual for parts to crumble off. Please handle with care.
